They died within a month of each other.
This is actually something that happens quite often in older couples, and has been studied by the medical/psychological community. I actually did research, and a few papers on it. You'd be surprised at how many couples make it to 50 years of marriage and then both die within a year of that. I believe it is just a physical manifestation of true love, and the inability of some couples to be without each other.
